Andy's Story

Andy Conlin is a Western Australian artist working across landscape, portraiture and more experimental forms of painting.

Born in the UK in 1972, Andy has spent most of his adult life in Australia. Although he had an early interest in art, it wasn't until the COVID pandemic that he returned to painting in earnest, beginning with watercolour before moving into oils and other media.

Painting outdoors has become central to his practice. Working directly from the landscape encourages a spontaneity and immediacy that he tries to carry into his studio work. Rather than faithfully recording a scene, Andy is increasingly interested in finding its essential character through colour, expressive mark-making and the balance between suggestion and detail.

Portraiture offers a different challenge. Working regularly from life, he is drawn to the subtle gestures and expressions that reveal something of an individual's character.

Andy approaches painting as an ongoing process of discovery. His work moves between observation and experimentation, often challenging his own habits and expectations as he searches for new ways of seeing and interpreting the world around him.
